One of these things is keyboard shortcuts. Ever press Ctrl + X instead of Ctrl + C? Instead of copying, you've cut. The X and C keys are right next to each other, too, increasing the possibility of this occurring. Shutdown shortcuts are no exception. They tend to be longer, too similar to each other, and unlike other shortcuts, have bigger consequences if you get the shortcut wrong.

Alt code shortcuts are popular in Windows PC to insert special characters and Unicode symbols. Many of us do not know that we can also use alt code shortcuts in Apple's MacBook and iMac computers. The default Apple keyboard also has two alt keys on the keyboard layout. They are named as Option with the small name 'alt' on it. I can't test on a retina Macbook but it works on my iMac. Open up Applescript editor, paste this in, and run it. Tell application 'Finder' to sleep. Shutdown Keyboard Shortcuts

Using a keyboard shortcut to shut down your Mac is all about convenience. Your computer could be frozen and you need to reboot in safe mode, or you could just want a faster way to close out running applications and immediately restart or turn off the computer. If you cannot use the trackpad to complete actions on the computer, you still have control through your keyboard.

Unfortunately, any keyboard shortcuts meant for shutting down or restarting your computer cannot be changed. You can change ones that do not hold as much weight for the performance of your Mac.

Keyboard Shortcuts to Shutdown/Restart a Mac

As a safety, these shortcuts require you to hold them down longer than you would a simple shortcut command, e.g., ⌘ + Z to undo changes.

To shut down your computer without any prompts to save or closing out applications, press and hold the Power button.

Save and Quit Before Restart/Shutdown

Reboot in Safe Mode

If your computer is experiencing a bigger technical issue or is frozen, you may want to reboot in safe mode. Hold down the Power button to shutdown the computer. Press and hold the Power again. Let go when the computer starts to reboot and immediately hold down Shift.

Changing Keyboard Shortcut for Options for Other Actions

1. Open the Apple menu on your Mac computer.
2. Find the System Preferences and click on it.
3. Navigate to the Keyboard option and select Shortcut. Here, you can change your shortcuts to the combination you would like them to be.
4. In the left pane are shortcut categories. On the right are activated shortcuts or ones that have no been configured yet. For the options on the right, a checkbox will be selected if the shortcut is activated. On the right of the description is the shortcut combination.
5. To change the shortcut, click on the combination.
6. Enter in the desired combination. You cannot use a command more than once.
7. Close and restart your Mac and test the new combination.
8. If you want to change the setting back to what it was for the first time, click on the Restore Defaults option.

MacBook keyboard has few distinctive sections: Function keys (in light blue), which provides access to various functions in MacBook itself or Mac OS system. By combining them with the FN key, you'll get access to F1 - F12 keys, which can be associated with particular application features (useful in Photoshop for example).

The second section is the modifier keys (in light yellow). Shift allows to type uppercase letters and other additional characters. Command and Alt/Option are used in keyboard shortcuts, as well as the Control key, which is used almost exclusively by Mac OS X and Apple programs.

Return and left Shift has two variants, one used in the US and Eastern Asia (horizontal Return and long Shift), and second, used in Europe, Middle East and Africa (vertical Return and short left Shift). Where is the Print Screen Button?

Unlike PC keyboard, there is no Print Screen key on MacBook keyboard. This functionality is accessed by keyboard shortcuts and - on Mac - you have greater flexibility:

• Command + Shift + 3 - captures entire screen;
• Command + Shift + 4 - captures selected region. Your cursor turns to crosshair and by clicking and dragging you can specify which area you want to capture;
• Command + Shift + 4 + Space - captures selected window. First press the shortcut from above, then - when you have crosshair - hit Space. The cursor will turn to the camera and the active window will have a blue overlay. Click on it to get it captured.

In some apps, like Photoshop, you need to add Control into the mix, to paste the screenshot into the app.
